Reimagining an Outdoor Space: Scissor Trusses and Subtle Illumination
In Green Township, a small 10×10 wood deck had lost its charm, leaving homeowners with a space that no longer invited outdoor moments. They imagined a retreat where shelter, light, and open air could coexist—a place for quiet mornings, casual entertaining, or simply soaking in the outdoors.
The solution emerged as a covered living area designed with careful attention to the home’s unique layout. A custom scissor-style truss roof stretches above the deck, fitting neatly beneath a second-story window while creating a sense of openness and height in the space. Every line and angle of the roof works with the existing architecture, framing the area without overwhelming it.
Inside, a beadboard-profile tongue-and-groove pine ceiling, finished in soft polyurethane, carries warmth and texture. Crown molding accents the edges, and rope lighting along the perimeter introduces a gentle glow at night, casting inviting shadows across the space.
Decking and fascia in rich Rustic Elm composite create a smooth, uninterrupted surface, while subtle railings and posts add structure without distracting from the overall flow. Lighting mounted on a corner post raises the perimeter illumination, allowing evenings on the deck to stretch late into the night.
Engineering challenges, such as limited vertical clearance and a brick veneer exterior, were handled with precision. Special ledger connectors transfer weight directly to the framing, keeping the exterior intact while supporting the new roof and deck. Each detail, from roof pitch to placement of lighting, balances functionality with quiet elegance.
The final space turns a failing deck into a destination. Open yet sheltered, textured yet clean, it invites moments of pause, connection, and enjoyment under sun, shade, or stars. Every visit reminds the homeowners why outdoor living can feel like its own sanctuary.
