Designing a Serene Screened Porch and Patio Retreat in Cleves, Ohio

In Cleves, the homeowners wanted a space to step outside and embrace nature while escaping the limitations of indoor living. Their existing deck wasn’t offering enough shelter or comfort for full enjoyment. The aim was to create a space that allowed them to savor the outdoors, no matter the weather.

The project began with a screened-in porch, designed to complement the existing deck. TREX composite decking in Rocky Harbor was chosen for its durability and low-maintenance nature, while black aluminum railings were integrated to maintain an open, unobstructed view of the yard, providing both security and visual clarity.

At the heart of the porch is a 36” Courtyard ventless gas fireplace, wrapped in Evolve Stone, which quickly became the focal point of the space. It brings warmth and a welcoming ambiance, perfect for both cozy evenings and relaxed mornings.

A Patio That Welcomes All

Under the porch, a dry walk-out patio with stamped concrete mimicking wood grain offered an extension of the outdoor living space. The Trex RainEscape drainage system kept the area dry, making it another versatile space for any occasion. The patio ties the porch into the larger landscape, offering more room to relax or entertain.

French doors were installed on both levels of the home to connect the indoors with the outdoor living areas. The upper-level doors, featuring full glass and decorative interior grills, added a stylish touch while letting in plenty of natural light. These doors were carefully set within the existing brick and slate wall, maintaining the home’s original aesthetic. The lower-level doors provided easy access to the patio, with internal blinds for added privacy.

Overcoming the Landscape

The natural slope of the backyard presented a challenge, so the site was regraded to create a more level foundation. A retaining wall was added on the left side to stabilize the land and integrate seamlessly into the design. Additionally, the RainEscape system’s downspouts were connected to the home’s existing drainage, ensuring efficient water flow away from the foundation.

A Seamless Extension

This project wasn’t just about adding a structure—it was about creating a space that felt like a natural extension of the home, blending comfort with the outdoors. Every detail, from the material choices to the layout, was carefully considered to ensure functionality and aesthetic appeal. The result is a two-level outdoor retreat that blends shelter with openness, inviting relaxation and connection with nature.
